Guilty pleasures

If some of London's best chefs can covet things like McDonald's Fillet O'Fish, mayonnaise, or chocolate bars, then I feel much better about my own guilty foody pleasures.

Which I am about to confess, thanks to Polly whose regular blog confessions have inspired many of us to get in touch with our innner Catholic.

So I confess that I am mad about Haribo jelly bears. And not just bears, but jelly bunnies (Easter edition), jelly cheeries, jelly frogs, tropical fruits, sport mix and all the rest. It doesn't even have to be Haribo but they usually have the widest choice.

I know what they are made of (bones, tissue and sometimes intestines of domestic animals--usually cows and pigs) but I can't help it. I loved them as a kid, like most kids do, except that I never outgrew it. I know they are awful, from the health point of view, and they make me really
nauseated sometimes (after I've gulped down a whole pack by myself, uhmm...). Naturally, I don't allow my own kids to eat them except on very rare occasions (so that it doesn't become a craved forbidden fruit).

And since I don't want to give a bad example either, I keep random packs in my jackets, or
hidden in the storage room. If you see me going in and out of the storage room for no apparent reason (like, I'm not taking anything in or out), you know what I'm up to.

I also have to admit that I have a soft spot for Nutella. There was a time in my life when I subsisted primarily on jars of Nutella. Some people eat it on bread or pancakes (you can even have it on pizza) but I used to just eat it with a spoon until I could summon some willpower to stop (usually about half way through the jar). Fortunately I got pregnant and Nutella lost its appeal in favor of regular food, so we stopped buying it. Nowadays I get it sometimes on the pretext that we need it for pancakes. Then we use about one tenth of it to spread over crepes and the rest... well, I don't need to tell you.

Now I'm curious to hear what other people can't resist and then feel guilty about. Confession time!

I can't stop drinking colas...I won't take diet coke or anything with "light" or "zero" printed on it. It has to be the real deal.
I also can't stop my cravings for potato chips.
I know they are both bad for me. I did stop eating chips and drinking cola for about a year...but...I confess I started again this year...just can't fight the cravings....

I can't stomach those light or diet versions of cola--they have an awful taste. I don't drink coke that often, but, when I do, it's the regular one.

Well, one day when we meet we're going to have a ball because you see my guilty pleasures are exactly the same... somehow I've got over feeling guilty about them, now it's pure pleasure

You're right, Polly--I don't actually feel guilty about them either. I've learned to live in peace with my bad habits :)

I feel bad about war and poverty. Nutella, Haribo, lying in bed till 11am, having afternoon naps, buying shoes and bags, ice cream sundaes... how could I feel bad about such good things?

Words of wisdom, Nats :D

Fizzy cola bottle sweets. I pick 'em out of the mixed packets. :-)

How did I forget them? I shared a packet of fizzy colas with Boris last week. It was a special treat for him when he was given all-clear to go back to school.

Oh, who am I fooling? It was a treat for Mummy under the pretext of wanting to do something special for Boris. Sigh...

I'm still making my way through dozens of baby easter eggs...

When My kids where young I had to hide my treats in weird places and keep changing the hideyholes to be one step ahead of the kids. I would often forget where they were and later find treats in the strangest of places. I still need to hide them from D#2 if she is staying.
I once went to an aunt's for morning tea and she went to the laundry and took the sweet biscuits out of the washing machine!!!
Happy sweet Days

Delwyn--my kids are still too young to figure out but the time will come when I will have to think hard to outsmart them. I will keep that washing machine in mind...
